Music Camp for Teens | August 7 – 11

Record High Summer School is 5-day immersive music camp for students ages 13 – 18. Presented by the premier music venue, Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, in collaboration with, and on location at, Arts High School in Newark, NJ, students apply for one of the two offered tracks, Contemporary Songwriting and Hip Hop – Lyric Writing and Performance. Record High faculty of music professionals as well as guest industry professionals provide valuable insight to give students the best chance at achieving success in their chosen track. The program will conclude with a performance showcase for friends and family on the final day with students and professional touring musicians.

AVAILABLE CAREER TRACKS

Contemporary Songwriting

Aspiring songwriters will sharpen the skills of their craft while exploring song structure, harmony, melody, lyric writing, and (where applicable) vocal technique. This track will also provide students with the opportunity to collaborate with singers and other songwriters. They will also gain valuable insight on sound business practices including effective marketing. This Career Track does not require you to be a singer. However, a rudimentary understanding of music theory, and some piano or guitar performance abilities are helpful.

Hip Hop – Lyric Writing and Performance

Emerging Hip Hop artists will hone their skills while exploring contemporary hip-hop lyric writing, beat making and performance techniques. This track will also provide students with the opportunity to collaborate with singers and songwriters and gain valuable insight on sound business practices including effective marketing.

Hip Hop Performer and Educator

Lyrically known as Purple and recognized as a skilled performer and leader in Hip Hop Education. Acknowledgments from participating as a “Lady’s First Fund” grant recipient, NJPAC’s Hip Hop Intensive Program Director, Next Level Program U.S. Cultural Diplomat, Hip Hop Culture Center in Harlem Artist, a former member of the Toni Blackman’s Rhyme Like A Girl Collective (Freestyle Union) and up and coming curator for Hip Hop art and performance.

Allie Moss

Recording Artist, Vocal Coach, Songwriter

Member of singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson’s touring band. Her songs have landed high-profile placements on Pretty Little Liars, Bones, Parenthood, and a prominent BT Infinity campaign in the UK as well as songs recently placed in Teen Mom and Shameless.

Who is eligible to register for Summer School?

Students ages 13 – 18 are eligible to register.

What sorts of learning and performing experiences are included?

  • Workshops, Clinics and Master Classes with Top Industry Professionals
  • Individual and small group instruction
  • Interactivity between various Career Tracks
  • Performance showcase at Arts High School

What does a typical day at Summer School look like?

Students typically begin their day with instruction in their specified career track. In the afternoon, they continue instruction, but also have time to collaborate with fellow students on various creative projects, within and outside of their tracks.

May I register if I have no music experience?

While experience varies from camper to camper, we encourage anyone seriously interested in exploring music as a career to apply.

How many students attend Summer School?

Approximately 30 spaces are reserved for Summer School students.

What is the program cost and what does it include?

Record High – Summer School tuition is $250. Lunch will be provided. FREE scholarships are available to ALL Newark and Jersey City student residents.

When is the deadline to register?

The final deadline to register is Friday July 28th and all materials should be received by Record High on or before that date. Should you need additional time, please email us to request an extension.

Is there an orientation session?

Yes! There is a mandatory virtual orientation that must be attended by the student and AT LEAST ONE parent/guardian on Wednesday August 2nd. If you are not able to attend we will do our best to schedule another time but all participants must complete an orientation session in order to attend Summer School.

How are students supervised at Summer School?

Summer School will have a full complement of Record High staff who will be on–site with students during their days at the camp.
